Southbank 2: Hand Drawn Representations

I love the fact that Hand Drawn Representations are still at the fore for major projects around the world.  Southbank 2, a major extension of the already hugely successful Southbank Parklands in Brisbane, is an excellent example of this.  I particularly love how the artist has framed each board.  They project a fun and happy proposal!?! Do you agree?

Reg Mombassa

Reg Mombassa, "White Shed near Airport"

Reg Mombassa (of MAMBO fame) continues to inspire me since I was alot younger. I admire his cartoonish way of portraying everyday life and see his influence in my approach to artistic representations in my own work.

Reg Mombassa, "White House, Tasmania"

This painting reminds me of the house I grew up in in Australia.

Reg Mombassa, "Rough Barked Apple Tree"

I find that Reg's representation of the life around us has a light heartedness, happy and almost childlike quality.  Very Aussie and very cool.  Top stuff!

Gotye

A music video for Gotye's "Hearts a Mess' and "Eye's Wide Open".  I am loving his visual approach to his music.  Quirky, beautiful and just a little bit creepy.

Mapping a Journey Home

I mapped my journey home from the Air Gallery, Mayfair.  As I was going to have a few pints with mates in Soho and going to see some other mates perform in their cabaret act, it turned out to be an interesting one...

Project Laneway

Here is a brief project I did whilst studying at Royal Melbourne of Technology, Australia.  We were all given a laneway in the CBD.  The project was to reply to specific site analysis.  I was interested in 3 things:

1. How water flowed along the laneways colonial cobble stones
2. How commercial businesses survived in the laneway's current condition (it was rather derelict)
3. How the laneway could connect to the Chinese community that surrounded it (Melbourne's Chinatown is the 2nd biggest after San Francisco)

The proposition developed over time to the form you see below.  It consists of a large fibreoptic lighting instalation that 'flows' along the laneway (mimicing water).  This flowing light would achieve several things:
1. Illuminate the laneway increasing it's attractiveness and assumed safety in the evening
2. Announce the laneway's entrance and exit
3. Encourage pedestrian traffic into existing commercial buildings by 'flowing' into the businesses    entrances

This was a first semester, year one assignment...

A Landscape I can never get tired of...

I know I keep banging on about Australia (and I may be a little bias) but I never get tired of looking at the landscape that is Sydney.  One of the most beautiful places in the world.  I was fortunate enough to live in Sydney for over a decade, and this city still calls me back home.  This is landscape as beauty, inspiration, pride, icon, joy and hope.  If you haven't been there, get there!

RNA Showgrounds Transformation Begins

Pretty exciting stuff...especially as a Queenslander.  The RNA Showgrounds hold a special place in Brisbane's heart and it has been a white elephant for far too long!  Looking forward to seeing the development get started.  A new urban centre for an already beautiful city
