Project Laneway

Here is a brief project I did whilst studying at Royal Melbourne of Technology, Australia.  We were all given a laneway in the CBD.  The project was to reply to specific site analysis.  I was interested in 3 things:

1. How water flowed along the laneways colonial cobble stones
2. How commercial businesses survived in the laneway's current condition (it was rather derelict)
3. How the laneway could connect to the Chinese community that surrounded it (Melbourne's Chinatown is the 2nd biggest after San Francisco)

The proposition developed over time to the form you see below.  It consists of a large fibreoptic lighting instalation that 'flows' along the laneway (mimicing water).  This flowing light would achieve several things:
1. Illuminate the laneway increasing it's attractiveness and assumed safety in the evening
2. Announce the laneway's entrance and exit
3. Encourage pedestrian traffic into existing commercial buildings by 'flowing' into the businesses    entrances

This was a first semester, year one assignment...
